internet vs. face-to-face

When I was still in academia/federally-funded research, I was continuously amazed at how much money was spent to attend face-to-face meetings that could have been conducted for nearly free over the internet. I'm sure there were psychological factors involved. So pay some psychologists to teach people how to make virtual meetings as productive as face-to-face ones. The funding agencies still come out way ahead.
Of course the airlines, hotels, and restaurants get hurt, so there is no perfect solution for everyone. But if efficiency is the goal (and I think it should be), the current process is so obviously ridiculous that it's just another example of people with capable minds keeping them closed.
