One thing that needs to be clarified is whether the players can be assumed to play "obviously correct" moves. I recall asking about this once and being told that the race is considered gin even if the winning player could lose by making legal (but obviously very "stupid") moves. In your example, 10 checkers on the ace point and 5 checkers on the deuce point cannot lose a backgammon unless the player rolls snake eyes and "stupidly" plays 2/1(4).
Anyway, there are other examples. White could have 13 checkers on the 1 point and one checker each on the 3 and 5 points, with Black having two or more checkers on each of White's 2 and 4 points. The only way White will not be forced to bear a checker immediately is by rolling 42 and playing it 5/1 3/1, breaking contact.
