No, no. He qualified through the normal process. The top 125 Fed Ex points finishers from the duration of the season -- points are awarded based on order of finish at every PGA tournament -- qualified for the Barclay's first round playoff tournament. The second tournament, this week, will include the top 100; the third tournament, the following week, will include the top 70; and the tour championship, the following week, will include the top 30. One can improve their rankings by good performances in the early rounds and get into the later rounds at the expense of someone else.
Of the 125 that qualified for the Barclay's -- all qualified on points won, Furyk was #3 for the year -- approximately 70 were selected by the sponsor, Barclay's, to play in the Pro-Am on Wednesday. People pay big bucks to the tourney to get to play in a group with one of the professionals. So, 70 were required by the rules to play in the Pro-Am -- half teed off in the morning with 3-4 amateurs on each of their teams, the other half teed off after lunch. Furyk, obviously, was in the morning group.
Thus, 55 of the 125 qualifiers for the main Barclay's tournament had no obligation to play Wednesday -- thus they could not be dq'd for not showing on time. Further, beginning in the second round of the playoffs this week, no one will be dq'd for not showing on time at the Pro-Am.
Consider, had Furyk qualified as #110 and been dq'd, he could not have been any higher than #110 this week (in fact, he would have dropped some) and would not have played in the remainder of the playoffs. This week let's assume #75 oversleeps and misses the Pro-Am. He is not penalized and has the opportunity to play, improve his ranking, and move on with the top 70 to the next round.
Further, since all the points are cumulative, all of the final 30 participants will have played in as many tournaments as they wished during the season plus the four playoff events -- though Furyk will have had only the opportunity to play in three of the four playoff events. And, these playoff events are each worth five times as many points as an individual regular tour event.
The ultimate FedEx Cup champion collects a $10 million prize, and it drops off rapidly thereafter.
Again, the simple point is that they changed the rules in the course of a continuing event.
