My One Suggestion For Madison

In Response To: Fast Play in Madison (Bill)

Sorry that I could not play in Madison this year, but I am Europe. As I mentioned a few weeks ago on this Web site, I have played three times in Madison and it is my favorite tournament in the USA. Hope to be back in Madison next year.

One thing I love about backgammon tournaments in Europe is the longer match length. In Bristol, England, all six rounds were 15pts. In Baden, Austria, the five rounds were 13pts, 13pts, 15pts, 17pts and 19pts. I would love to see longer matches in tournaments in the USA. A clocked round of 15pt matches takes less time than an unclocked round of 11pt or even 9pt matches.

When I play competitive 9pt matches for money online, it takes under 30 minutes on average.

If all matches were played with a clock, the two-hour time slot would be long enough to comfortably fit in 11pt matches.

The format at Madison is terrific just as it is. I would love to see other tournaments do the same. (Rory, are you paying attention?) No one from Madison has asked for my opinion on how the tournament could be improved, but if I were asked, I would have only one suggestion:

Lengthen the matches from 9pts to 11pts. Could be done easily if clocks were mandatory.
