Meyer Dice Tube (revisited)

I will contend -- as one who possesses multiple engineering degrees -- the end caps of the dice cube are either extremely loosely fitted or that the end cap which dislodged was not properly installed/seated at the time -- though we had played quite a long match with the dice tube.
I have no engineering degree(s), but I did watch Richard put the cap on one end of the tube after he inserted my precision dice. The cap did not slide on easily but rather Richard (with auditory confirmation) had to twist rather strongly to get the cap in place.
Assuming both ends of his dice tube are similar, my speculation (not having watched your incident) is that one of the caps wasn't completely inserted. Otherwise (but less likely), the tube at that end could have been damaged (split) leading to a loose fit.
I'm wondering (and hope Brett is reading) if polycarbonate would be an appropriate alternative to acrylic. It's way stronger (i.e. "bullet proof glass") so any shortcomings of the softer, more fragile acrylic are rendered irrelevant. (My eyeglass confirm very clear polycarb exists.) I just checked McMaster-Carr supply and 1 foot length of 2 1/4 o.d., 1/16 wall (item # 8585K65) tube costs $5.67. On this site, that's about 1/3 the cost of 2 1/4 o.d., 1/8 wall acrylic.
