In answer to your questions,

1. There is a significant discount at the La Posada hotel for the backgammon event. It's normally in the $200-$300 range, reduced to $99 nightly for the tournament. Details on the tournament and the hotel can be found at http://www.backgammonsantafe.org/tournament/

2. The format will be the standard single elimination-progressive consolation-progressive last chance format. Regular weekend tournaments don't have enough time to run a Swiss event; Madison is able to do it because the tournament finishes on Monday.

Madison attendance was down precipitously from last year. It's not at all clear to me that the Swiss format helps attendance. I like the format, and so do most of the players who were in Madison this year, but perhaps not everybody does.
