[c]urrently, live over-the-board backgammon in the United States is a gamblers' game.

I applaud the effort of this group, but to include, let alone start their charter with this sentence is so wrong, I can't even begin to say how wrong they are to do that.

Note Phil's analogy to bridge. THERE IS an entry fee in bridge, but a small one ($10-$20 per two session event? I haven't played many years...) to cover the expenses. Presumably backgammon would have to do the same thing, i.e. charging what we call a "registration fee". That could be a flat fee for the full meet, a custom fee for each event, or even a graded fee according to skill level. (This latter has been debated here recently in a different context.)
