Ignorance makes for interesting discussions, so let me offer an ignorant guess. In many other contexts, odd match lengths are needed to break ties (e.g., "best of 7"). This may have gotten people into the habit of assuming that a match length should always be odd, even though in backgammon matches the tiebreak issue is nonexistent.
