Why always odd?

Tom is right about lengthening the match. An 8-point match can easily be over in a single game, a 9-point match not so much (by more than a factor of 1 game, I would surmise.) Also, with games often valued at 2 or multiples of 2, you are more likely to get to a Crawford game, again, lengthing the match.
