Blinding signups?

You did get to know who was in the pool ahead of you, but once you were in, you were in--you couldn't duck out because after you got in, for some reason 10 or 12 experts immediately jumped in too...
This brings up an issue discussed here before (initiated by UBK, I believe) regarding blind entries. Let me give an example:
At Madison, eight players signed up early for the Masters and played down to two (Sean Garber and Bill Riles). Friday evening two more signed up (and played), with Rich Munitz defeating Stanley Livingston. Then the event stalled for a couple days while the staff tried to find two more players to fill a 12-bracket. MCG signed up and then waited. Someone tried to talk me into playing. I pointed out that I almost never play Masters (I've done it exactly once). Then I said, "but the person who does sign up must first defeat MCG, then Richard. How do you like them odds?"
Eventually, I believe, MCG signed up again, effectively purchasing a bye into the second round, where he lost to Rich. (Expensive weekend, but I suspect he can chou up his bankroll back in Chitown....) Rich won the bye (in the $-equitable playoff); Bill defeated Sean, and Rich made a deep comeback in his match against Bill for the title.
