Clocks and Penalties

From my PoV this suffers from the same malady that infested many tournaments of the past with well-meaning directors. In the cases I reference, clocks were placed on matches AFTER they had already started damaging the flow of the tournament.
For typical weekend events (two day and three day) in the US, there is very little (probably "NO" is more accurate) spare time built into the schedule. As a result, time delays end up eating into the sleeping time of the players, as Paul and Bill have given an example of in this thread.
For me personally, who quite likely plays better in matches which aren't clocked (taken in isolation), I see a tradeoff between playing a bit faster than is my nature, and getting rest so that later in the weekend I can be closer to my best than would otherwise happen. You don't have to play all that many weekend events to experience the negative effects like Paul and Bill, at least back when clocks weren't used.
