Backgammon Development Thoughts

Back in the day....late 70s early 80s there were college regional tournaments once a year. It was a five state regional (Virginia, Tennesse, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky) for all the student union activities. Backgammon, bridge, pool, bowling...and several other games, etc. There were 20-40 schools with hundreds of participants in all games. The regional BG tourney had about 30-40 or so players, double elimination, 9 pt. matches over 2 days. I participated twice as one of Virginia Techs BG reps....one year in Knoxville at UT (1979) and the next year at UNC -Charlotte (1980). There was regional in 1981 as well (I did not qualify that year). We had a BG qualifier tourneys at VT that had 30-40 players for 2 spots. The student union paid for the trip to the regional, shared hotel rooms and bus rides. It was a great experience both years, doing well in BG in Charlotte and getting wiped out early in Knoxville and partying the rest of the time.
Anyone know if these types of regionals are still going on for any student union activites?
Some of the games had a national tournment as well.
