A bad play by Jeter, yes, but not for the reasons given here

Like it or not, attempting to dupe umpires is routine in baseball and is considered permissible. To me the problem with Jeter's act, and real the reason it was a bad baseball play, is that he embarrassed an experienced umpire -- a whole umpiring crew, in fact -- while gaining little in return. Jeter must have known that his hoax would be captured on instant replay, but he chewed the scenery for all it was worth in any case. Umps, like cops, will find a way to exact their revenge over time, and when you add it all up it will cost Jeter and the Yankees far more than they gained from a lousy free pass to first base.
