Jeter is a great player and deserving of the HoF. Over 14 years with the Yankees, he has averaged 33 doubles, 4 triples, 17 homeruns, and 23 stolen bases-at a 79% success rate, and batted .314, per 162 games. All this from a shortstop. He has rarely missed more 10 games in a season and only once missed more than 14. He is durable and consistent. First ballot HoF'er? Maybe he is deserving of that, maybe not.
If there is any area where he has been way over-hyped it is in his fielding. This is the area that would keep him out of my consideration for a first ballot HoF'er. Derek Jeter is a terrible defensive shortstop. Sabermetricians have long known this and with each new defensive metric that is developed, Jeter looks worse and worse. Jeter is one of the best at converting balls hit near him into outs, although he often makes the standard play look spectacular, but his range is very poor. Jeter actually has improved his range late in has career, likely through the use of nutrition and conditioning, from horrible to bad. That he has four gold gloves is a travesty!
