'Priority #1 is scoring a touchdown'
Let's say the Chargers pass for a TD on first down and the Chiefs get the ball with a minute and change to go and three timeouts. How much more do the Chargers win than if they had run and made a touchdown? How much more do they win than if than if they had gained two or three yards on first down running the ball and given the Chiefs little chance to respond had they then scored?
Priority #2 is preventing a return field goal. I am not convinced that running the ball on 1st down decreases the chances of P1, but I am sure it decreases the chances or P2.
