Establishing the running game is important because it opens up the passing game and then you are able to mix up plays. If you can't establish the running game then all you can do to move the ball and get first downs is pass and if you are only passing then the defense is able to guard you better. However, if you have established the running game they don't know if you are going to run or pass and have to guard against both.

As for time of possession, it has more to do with moving the ball. Yes, each team gets the ball for the same amount of possessions but if you are able to move the ball, and thus win the field position battle, and likely score more. If you have the ball for three or four first downs each time you hold it then you are obviously going to have longer time of possession than a team that goes three and out. So it isn't really trying to hold on to the ball for a longer time, its trying to keep the ball for more first downs, more field yardage and likely more scoring.

Also, as already pointed out, teams who are significantly ahead are more likely to run the ball than to pass. It both keeps the ball more secure and shortens the game. By eating up the clock you decrease the amount of times your opponent will own the ball and have scoring opportunities. And the fewer scoring opportunities they have the less likely they are to score enough to catch up with you.

But the real key is.... Be a Boise State fan! How can you lose?????
