That's just my understanding of what the bots tell us. The logic, I guess, is that it usually works and then you still have the ball with a chance to score. If you punt, sure you've given the other team 30 more yards to travel, but you've given up on any chance of keeping the ball.

Chuck's bot seems to suggest that "conventional wisdom" focuses too much on avoiding the worst-case scenario. The 30 yards of field position you gain by punting are nice, but they're not the be all and end all.
