By eating up the clock you decrease the amount of times your opponent will own the ball and have scoring opportunities.

But this will also decrease the number of times YOU own the ball as well. Lots of running basically reduces the total number of posessions for both teams, but doesn't inhibit the other teams ability to score. 'Keeping the other offence off the field' is just coach-speak. They'll get there fair opportunity, eventually.

Winning the 'time of possession battle' implies your offensive possessions were more likely than not, successful. It's an effect of winning, not a cause.
