yes, the only way Boise certainly plays for the National Championship is if they go undefeated and there are not two other undefeated teams -- if they are the only undefeated team they play for sure, if they are one of two undefeated teams they may still lose out; they lose out to any other undefeated teams on strength of schedule; they potentially lose out to one-loss conference champs from SEC, Big-12, Big-10, or Pac-10; once the BCS rankings start in another 2-3 weeks with the computer 1/3 factor included (w/ specific emphasis on strength of schedule) the difficult road they have ahead will become apparent; as the football year progresses all the other schools will be playing top quality major opponents while Boise's schedule falls off in quality -- thus the other teams strength of schedule will improve almost every week while Boise's drops every week; even TCU, as a fellow non-BCS conference school, will have a much stronger overall schedule w/ later games against Utah, Air Force and BYU (plus they've already beaten Oregon State); after Oregon State this weekend Boise plays nobody the rest of the year
I'm not saying it is necessarily fair, it's just the way it is. Boise has to play better teams to prove they deserve a shot at the championship.
An undefeated Big-12, SEC, or Big-10 team(s) will have likely beaten 2-3 highly ranked teams from within their own conferences. The Big-10 champ doesn't have to play a conference championship game so no potential of a loss there. The SEC and Big-12 conference champions will have just beaten another top ten team in their conference championship games.
