Many players don't realize that position 1 is still a take.

I do recall a few years ago when I took a similar position in the chouette but where the box had two fewer pips to play before breaking. I was the only taker and all the crew offered extras which I accepted also. Soon I was gammoned with my 1 checker closed out.
