Keep in mind that the best move does not have to be made each time. The key is that the same move is made on all boards so that there is no divergence. In fact, sub-optimal moves (possibly very sub-optimal) can result in more interesting continuations rather than what effectively becomes a game against a bot. Since the goal is not to win, but to not make mistakes, it doesn't actually matter if the players are deliberately placed in disadvantageous but more interesting positions.
