I think the way backgammon 'might' work on television would be to concentrate on the personalities and show them in exotic locales talking about the upcoming match and the strategies they planned to employ against their opponent. Also, bio's on the players would be nice, including comments about the games they play and why they think backgammon is the best, most fast-paced, and most exciting strategy game. Have them tell how they became a world class player, which may encourage viewers to emulate them. Create backgammon personalities that are attractive and/or interesting people to the viewers. Let the viewers identify and root for their favorite players. And have some anecdotes about the important players in backgammon history and funny or interesting things that have happened in the past. Then flash to the players actually playing their matches and show key plays or rolls that decided the match-especially the exciting ones. Then a very brief interview after the match. Don't spend too much time on the actual match itself. It doesn't work in poker and it would be impossible to make it work in backgammon.
I think you want to make people think, hey this a fun, challenging game that is played in exotic locales by interesting people and you don't have to be a genius to win a tournament, since there is a lot of luck involved.
The fun, fast paced and exciting game played by jet-setters is the image that helped start the backgammon craze in the 70's.
