It sounds very interesting. I was completely turned off chess as a student by the discovery that my reasoning ability was consistently trumped by players who had simply memorised the game far enough. (Finding people who played Chess960 was a welcome discovery later in life.) Not sure that backgammon has quite the same issues, although playing on FIBS I do find with weak players one does tend to end up in a lot of very similar games, and variations to stir things up a bit would be very welcome!
