I saw a very good documentary about Scrabble, but it mostly followed 5 or 6 personalities through a season and had very little actual game play itself. Forgot the title...

It is my belief that Poker (and even Spelling Bee) can make good TV because almost everyone in the potential audience knows how to play. Not so with backgammon. Even with good commentary, a non-player will just see randomly moving stacks of checkers, signifying nothing.
