Origin of the term "bot"

Before my time, but if you were to really be interested Gerald Tesauro might be the best place to start. Since backgammon Bots specifically go back to at least 1989 he might have the earliest known usage somewhere. His papers on Neurogammon and TD Gammon use AI, Artificial Intelligence, and engine but I could find no reference to Bot or Robot used as a moniker for a backgammon playing program in his papers.
Now just as a footnote, the first usage of 'Bot on rec.games.backgammon (That was used in the context of describing a computer program that plays backgammon) goes back to about 1995 in this post:
