Origin of the term "bot"

Yes, that's basically it. The first time many people played strong computer opponents was on FIBS or GamesGrid where these programs played as "robots" (acting as human competitors). Over time, the term "bot" referred to these programs even when they weren't playing on a server. I think it stuck because "bot" is such a unique term and it's easy to say and easy to remember.
I'm not familiar with chess software, but in backgammon I would use the term "engine" to refer to the part of the program that makes the play decisions, whereas "bot" refers to the whole program; e.g., a "bot" can do rollouts but an "engine" cannot.
(The terms "engine," "neural net," and "AI" are sort of interchangeable.)
