Origin of the term "bot"

I would think that "neural net" is interchangeable only in the case of backgammon. Among people who actually care about the details of the underlying algorithms, there is a pretty clear distinction between neural-net algorithms and other kinds of algorithms that are used in artificial intelligence. As I understand it, chess programs still rely heavily on extensive tree search, so I would be surprised if Rybka, Fritz, etc., were commonly referred to as "neural nets." But I don't follow chess or chess programming as much as I used to.
