Only negative reasons?

During the 20th Century I'm aware of three backgammon booms (not all of the same magnitude): A) 1920's, B) 1970's, C) 1990's. Why?
A) Roaring 20's?
B) Prince Obolensky followed by positive press from major magazines?
C) Internet backgammon (particularly FIBS, but followed by other successes)?
The fact is, we don't know the reasons for ebs and flows, and as is often the case in this complicated universe, there could be more than one. AFAIK, booms are followed by busts. When the glamor and excitement wear off, people move on to other things.
Backgammon needs a shot in the arm. We can blame poker and the global (deep) recession and lick our wounds / drown our sorrows. Or we can go take a positive view and start the next boom. I'm reminded of an axiom from a motivation program I once bought (and still try to follow):
Those who say "I can" and those who say "I can't" are both right nearly 100% of the time.
