The latest I have ever played in an ABT event was 4:10 a.m. The match didn't begin until 1 a.m., and I demanded a clock. Despite the clock, this 7-point match lasted 3 hours. Over forty people, either of sadistic or masochistic bent, stayed up until the bitter end to watch the train wreck. I can't fault the director. Sometimes things happen.
I also cannot claim ultimate bragging rights. Thirty years ago a player entered all three divisions at the Plimpton Cup, and held up all three with his slow play. He reached the semifinals of the World Championship (Open division), and drew Nack Ballard. Their 17-point match started at 9 p.m., and finished at 5:30 a.m. (I do know of two other matches that lasted 8.5 hours, but those were for more than 17 points.) After winning the match at 5:30 a.m. Nack had to play his World Championship final against Sandy Lubetkin (one of the era's most talented players), televised to hundreds of people, with Magriel doing commentary, at 10 a.m. Nack won a well-deserved championship, but it took its toll. Before that day Nack was as tall as Tony Curtis, and had the same haircut.
