I have also recommended the article to all of our students. In addition, on our web site are Rules of Thumb for Checker play that gives, without explanation, some pretty good hints about not just the opening moves, but all moves. These can be extremely valuable to beginners and intermediates. A couple of examples:

In the early game, ask yourself can I hit, can I make a point, and can I safety checkers--IN THAT ORDER.

If you opponent has 2 checkers on the 8 point, that's an incentive to split.

Be more willing to take risks in the early game so you won't have to later.

The ROTFCP can be found https://sites.google.com/site/backgammonlessons/rules-of-thumb-for-checker-play
