In Response To: Update from Maryland (Rich Munitz)

@ Richard: The brochure states clearly that pre-registration is as simple as sending an email and making clear which Jackpot and which entry level you want in. No email = no pre-registration.

@ Bill: I appreciate the constructive critcism and believe it or not, I carefully listen to every single feedback I get.

@ Stick: Thanks for the attendance update.

@ Leo: Thanks for the accurate remark.

But there are some points that players miss and maybe itīs helpful to give some explanations here:

4-day event vs. 3-days event. In order to obtain the rake rate in the hotels and give them out to the players, a certain number of room nights must be guaranteed. If I turn the event into a 3-days, regular ABT tournament, people will still room-up and spend 2 nights instead of 3 or 4 and the requirements wonīt be met. Meeting facilities also depend on room nights. No way, on top of all other expenses, to pay penalty on those 2 things. Also, we have quite a few people who refuse to play late night and early morning. They also want a long dinner break and preferrably a lunch break. At the same time, people want the room to be open 24 hours for their private games and chou action. Everybody expects the tournament to run smoothly and to finish on time. Try to please everyone if you can.

Entry fees: Lowering entry fees will only attract local players. It is simply not rewarding for a West Coaster to travel to MD if there is nothing in the pot. And yes, the only income for an organizer is rakes. I have responded to that many times and there is no way to cover expenses with a rake on 200$, even without being in my shoes with probably the highest expenses among US TDīs. I will change my entry fees once I switch from Backgammon to charity and have a red cross tattooed on my forehead. As long as this doesnīt happen, I will have "expensive" tournaments for those who like to play for more money and the "higher-rollers". By the way, if anyone thinks that the tournaments in US are expensive, feel free to visit Europe.

If you want someone else to run the show in MD next time, start looking for him right away, because I wonīt repeat it again.
