'The new San Francisco tourney is a great location in an area with a lot of players and a lot of things to do if someone wants to stay over a bit (see the Santa Fe tourney).'
'I think Chiva's original idea of moving the US Open around the country each year to different cities, with the consequent exposure to more players, was much preferable to permanently basing it in Ft. Lauderdale -- which already has a tournament with its own problems (see above).'
I think holding the U.S. Open in San Francisco would draw 30 to 50% more players on a regular basis. San Francisco and Los Angeles, a six hour drive away, are two of the top four or five cities in the U.S., in regard to the number of backgammon players. In addition, San Francisco is one of the best tourist locations in the world. Certainly, alternating the event between the two cities would make sense, giving players on both coasts ease in participating every other year.
