The question is, does it matter? Is there a position where moving the 4-1, (or any second roll) before the first roll will take a checker off?

Best play with 6-3 is 12/6 9/6. But then 4-1 doesn't take a checker off.

Best play with 4-1 is 12/8 7/6. That loses 0.14% fewer gammons than 9/5 7/6. But then 6-3 doesn't take a checker off.

If instead the 4-1 is played 9/5 7/6, then 6-3 does take a checker off.
