An easier version of this interesting question would be where the player not on roll is gin to win the gammon in two rolls, for example if he has 4 checkers on his ace point.

Phil's problem where the player not on roll has 4 checkers on his 4pt is more complicated because that player is not even gin to win the gammon in 5 rolls.
