I suspect Phil probably meant to say 4 checkers on the ace point.

My opinion is that the entire concept of "I'll give you your best" only has a benefit when the player bearing off is very likely to be off on his next roll. For example, if I have a checker on the 5-point, it is likely a waste of time for my opponent to sit there agonizing over the best play to get off the gammon since he probably will not get another roll anyway.

Conversely, if I have four checkers on my ace point like we are postulating, then 1/6 of the time I get off and we saved a little time, and 5/6 of the time I fail to get off and we probably waste additional time by introducing the additional complication of playing two rolls at once. In that situation I doubt we come out ahead in the long run.
