I'll overlook the intentional personal insult, asshole. Anytime, anywhere.
I think the thing many of you are overlooking is that by Oklahoma taking the single point, Missouri, then leading by only eight points, also has to play quasi-legitimately for the remainder of the game.
So, not only does Oklahoma keep itself in the game, they keep Missouri in the game. If Missouri leads by nine they don't have to do anything other than take knees, using time and/or forcing Oklahoma to use up their timeouts, and then punt.
If Oklahoma only trails by eight (and I think there was something like 3:13 to go) they may choose to kick deep on the kick-off, try to stop Missouri on three downs, and force them to punt. Oklahoma could then have reasonably good mid-field field position -- w/ maybe 1:30 to go and no time outs. In the college game, with timeouts accompanying first downs, this is far from a hopeless position. Missouri does not want this scenario to occur so they will play to make a first down -- they may not make a first down and be forced to punt or they may have a turnover. Either way, you make them play rather than simply letting them run out the game.
So, there is a big difference. Both Oklahoma and Missouri will each play very differently with a 9 point margin than with either a 7 or 8 point margin. They both play the same manner whether the margin is 7 or 8. With a 9 point margin Missouri doesn't have to play and Oklahoma is all but forced to try the onside kick.
