In Response To: Question For Chuck Bower And Frank Frigo (Paul Weaver)

We certainly haven't done a thorough investigation in the college game. But the pros is easy to answer: none. Belichick has made some good decisions (like yesterday's 4th and 1 late, which failed but they survived) but he's also made some bad ones.

Sometimes (in both college and pro) you see a decision made which we agree with. But later they act in such a way that we think they are using something other than "science" (like a Ouija Board). I recall watching Weiss at ND go for first down with 4th and 10 at the opponent's 25 late in the game when a FG would have put them ahead. But the typical headscratcher is when they go for a 4th and short early (when it's right, but not super critical) and later in the same game when it really is worth a lot of GWC, they kick. I guess maybe it (figuratively more than literally) depends upon which way the wind is blowing.

Pete Carrol appeared to make a lot of good decisions at USC, but not always. I guess it's easy to go for it when you expect to win by 35. It will be interesting to see what he does at Seattle. (I haven't actually dug through any gamelogs, but Frank looked at one early this season and he wasn't impressed.)
