Joe Russell: It is clearly right to go for two when you are down by 15 points and score a touchdown. Why? Because you will know whether you made it or not and can adjust your strategy accordingly. This is something that has gnawed at me for years. Almost no coach understands this simple logic. If you make it, you know you need one touchdown to tie. If you miss it, you know you need two scores and it defines your strategy. Depending on the time left in the game, you have options to onside kick or not if you make it. If you miss, you probably should onside kick. Kicking the extra point may keep you in the game longer, psychologically, than if you go for two and miss, but you will not know whether you need two scores or one and your strategy will not be clearly defined. How will you feel if you use all the clock and score in the closing seconds only to miss the two point conversion? You will wish you had tried to score more quickly and had a chance to onside kick with a little time left.

This.
