An interesting variation on the theme occurred in the 1966 Rose Bowl. #1 Michigan State, trailing UCLA 14-0, scored a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Preferring to go for the win because the national championship was on the line, they went for two! Many coaches would have postponed the decision for later, making the entire game a win-lose proposition on a single conversion attempt. By going for 2 after their first score, MSU gave themselves the same chance to win the game by converting, but they also gave themselves a bonus scenario: even after missing the attempt, they can at least salvage a tie if they make a 2-point conversion on their second try.

Sadly the Spartans were not rewarded for their sound strategy and they missed both conversion tries. At least in those days the final UPI poll was taken before the bowls, so they got to share the title anyway.
