It is clearly right to go for two when you are down by 15 points and score a touchdown. Why? Because you will know whether you made it or not and can adjust your strategy accordingly. This is something that has gnawed at me for years. Almost no coach understands this simple logic. If you make it, you know you need one touchdown to tie. If you miss it, you know you need two scores and it defines your strategy.
I agree with Joe and agree with Jason agreeing with Joe. This is the core of the argument. When Bill says 'it is now only a one-possession game', this DOESN'T mean they now have any easier path to win or tie the game. The final 2-point conversion fails at the same rate as the first. If they go for it and fail OR succeed the first time, they have a two different but clear paths to the victory (or tie) that no longer depends on the vagaries of an upcoming 2-point conversion.
If just kick the PAT it might STILL be a two-possession game (because your final 2-pointer fails), you just don't know it yet!
