I guess what I meant is that going for it when trailing by 8 isn't "better" than going for it when trailing by 9, any more than playing 8/7 is better than playing 1/o. I suppose I could have chosen a better example (e.g., a bearoff) where it can be shown that the best play definitely loses in a variation where the 2nd best play does not.
