Thanks Paul!
Interesting question you ask. First, I am not sure what my country is - I am Dutch, my home is in Italy, I lived in China for 10 years out of the past 11, and am right now in Mongolia.
In all these countries, American Football is not very popular. In general, I don't think this sport is popular outside the USA (people watch the Superbowl, but that's it). This is probably a sport that needs getting used to, and which you should have played as a kid to appreciate. Same for soccer I guess - if you did not grow up with it, it is a boring game to watch most of the time (although the recent 10-0 trashing of Feijenoord by PSV in the Dutch league would have been fun to watch for all).
Among the American Football-like sports, I believe that rugby is the most popular internationally, and is played at high level in a large number of countries.
Of the typical American sport, basketball (NBA) is hugely popular in Asia (now Chinese television on in the background, Spurs against Hornets), baseball not so much in continental Asia (Japan a different matter!) but was/is quite popular in Netherlands and Italy. Hockey (ice hockey, not field hockey)- hugely popular in some European countries, in others not at all.
