Why are they better?

I think its mostly about innate understanding of the problem type that backgammon poses, along with analytical skills that allow you to have a stronger assessment of any given position.
This does not necessarily correlate to IQ / Gaming skills / Memory skills.
Of course, when you study like these guys do, then a whole bunch of the required elements will naturally tend to come together. I dont think that any of the super-strong players are really any more talented innately than anyone else in their bracket of necessary skills, they merely chose to focus in on backgammon.
An example of this is watching someone do a tight rope walk. They can walk it and look like some kind of tightrope walking savant, but really, they chose to hone their balance and physical control skills in that area. Doesnt make them any better than anyone else with that same skill bracket.
There are intrinsic problems with things like IQ (society-bias), and memory management (photographic doesnt mean you understand what you can recall), so its not really fair to use these as criteria as to why one player is better than another at one game. You can train yourself to achieve better results (in an iq test), and to work on your memorizing skills, but neither of these will enhance your ability to play backgammon.
