What makes an expert an expert? Patricia Benner wrote an entire book – “From Novice to Expert” – about this topic and it became part of her theory of nursing. The core is based on A FIVE-STAGE MODEL OF THE MENTAL ACTIVITIES INVOLVED IN DIRECTED SKILL ACQUISITION (http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA084551&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf , for a better overview http://www.sld.demon.co.uk/dreyfus.pdf) from Stuart E. Dreyfus. An expert has: “Authoritative knowledge of discipline and deep tacit understanding across area of practice; excellence achieved with relative ease; able to take responsibility for going beyond existing standards and creating own interpretations; holistic grasp of complex situations, moves between intuitive and analytical approaches with ease; sees overall 'picture' and alternative approaches; vision of what may be possible.” I think, you can transfer this approach to learning backgammon. Second. If we measure quality with the reference of bot research, then there is a pre-bot and a post-bot age. If you were trained in the pre-bot age, you have to recompile your brain. And we have surely no archimedic point of backgammon with the bot standard of today. Even a very good book like “Cube reference positions” with snowie research would be with computer performance of today a different book. Last, but not least. Conciousness is only the peak of the iceberg. The”gut” of an expert are far more neurons, working like a hexacore and multiple threads at the same time. It is flying beyond thoughts.
