Your supposition seems to be that the dice that go into the baffle box might not be the ones that come out, ie the dice are somehow retained and simultaneously switched over for gaffed dice that actually emerge onto the board. Have you seen such a device, Bob? It's theoretically possible, but there are a number of things that would/could mitigate against the suspicion of such a device.
The transparent baffle box that you refer to would certainly be one of them. It is ideal also for allowing chouette players or spectators an unimpeded view. I have seen two types in use, and own a wooden one. The other that I saw was perspex; it was a beautiful object. Ones that are solid but with perspex sides are also in use.
You might obtain a collapsible baffle box. I have owned one for years, and have had a player take one apart and examine it, which all would be welcome to do!
Even solid baffle boxes may have apertures at the back, so that players can peer into them.
If you use dice that are larger than the thickness of the walls of the box, then this would also preclude the 'secret compartment' that you imply might be waiting to grab the dice that went in to switch them for biased ones.
Using transparent precision dice, even more so with serial numbers, would help to detect such a switch, if such a contraption has ever been made.
One should not use a baffle box to replace the need for lipped cups and shaking, but instead use these in addition to the box. If so, then a baffle box is clearly a GREAT AID to ensuring random rolls and therefore fair play in this aspect of the game.
A key point which I forgot to state in my original post is that, for the two or three reasons I gave, when a clock is used there is actually MORE argument for also using a baffle box (or Meyer Dice Tube) not less!
