1) 'Gentleman' and 'jerk' do not cover the full spectrum.
2) Although I understand your contention in this thread (and the one in response to RDR), the fact is that to follow the rules strictly (as you suggest) Neil could not refuse Gregg's request. What he could have done (in making his move legal) was to bear a checker off the 6-point and then play his ace elsewhere, giving Gregg effectively the same 11/36 shot he would have gotten had he accepted Neil's illegal move.
If we are talking in the ideal, what I'd really like to see happen is that the illegal moves rule remains as it is written, and that everyone plays 'legal moves' (for purely sportsmanship reasons) anyway, rendering the acceptance of illegal moves an antiquated artifact.
