Personally, i think the case of Roethlisberger is a sort of tragedy. He is a player of "All-Madden"-class. But his personal problems shouldn't be processed in sports. Perhaps, the suspendig give hime a break to look what is really important in his life, and that personal life can heavily influence the social role. If he get four years, things are messed up, without anything is going better. "Ben has done a good job this summer of growing as the person that he needs to be, both on and off the field." So the penalty gave him the chance to change something serious. I think, three strikes and you are out.
But the football question is interesting. Can there be any other important besides time saving reasons?
