When John showed me this live I, too, said that I'd make the 9pt instead of blitzing. I wasn't sure enough to bet on the play and the bot often prefers blitzing for all the reasons you pointed out. [so many men in the zone, the heightened gammon value, the fact the opponent has an inner board blot, having your opponent outboarded, and being left with a decent position even if the blitz is immediately stymied]

However, I've been training myself more and more to simply make the play that wins more games. Here I overestimated the difference in games won between my play, making the 9pt, and the blitzing play. That was my fault in mis-analyzing the position. It turns out the difference in single wins isn't as great as I thought it would be. The reason I prefer in general when I think plays are close the play that wins the most single games is a built in function of my gammon value being lower than what the bot reports and my opponent's gammon value being higher.
