OT -- College Football

I root for the Detroit Lions, who could be charged with crimes against humanity on any given Sunday. Setting that aside, I am aware of only four prosecutions for sports violence in modern times, all in the NHL. Three of the four occurred in Canada which doesn't really count of course.

There have been some prosecutions at the amateur level and in pickup games. Generally speaking, the standard for what constitutes criminal conduct is of course higher, particularly while the ball is in play. You might be able to get away with punching someone while scrambling for a fumble, but the same punch during a time-out could in theory lead to prosecution. In practice, the lack of real-world prosecutions speaks for itself.

My legal advice is that if you're going to sucker-punch someone on the other team, save it for a home game where the authorities are more likely to be favorably disposed.
