Ruling Question

I feel like you are torturing the wording of the rules a bit in an effort to arrive at what most of us see as the common-sense solution, not that I have a problem with the outcome of course. I agree that there is some sort of distinction between a checker being "borne off" and being merely removed from the board, but as Bob's examples show there are plenty of gray areas.
I tend to subscribe to the concept of a distinction between illegal plays and impossible plays, but I don't know that the rules reflect my preference. In a world where your opponent is allowed to condone it if you put yourself on the bar, is the example which started this thread really that much worse?
